Warhammer Unit Focus: Kastelan Revisited

Welcome supplicants of the Omnissiah to our Unit Review: Kastelan Robots, Part Deux, the Codex revival. Our first review looked at how the Kastelans had changed going into 8th edition, now we’re back to see how the Codex: Adeptus Mechanicus have affected these big beautiful monsters. Beep-boop as it were and on we go!

First off, the Codex saw no change in points for the Kastelan Robots, which is a boon as they were on the high-end of units available to the priests of Mars. Likewise their stats and weapons remain unchanged, another leg-up for them as a unit. The only actual change to them was a clarification on their Repulsion Grid. In it, the reflected shot is now expressly on the actual die roll of a 6. This is after re-rolls but before modifiers. While it was nice to see mortal wounds bouncing off on a 5 or 6, it really was too good. What really changed is the inclusion of Forgeworld Dogmas and Stratagems.

Tournament Recap: The Empire Strikes Back 2

Let me tell you a tale, of woe, and triumph, and of beep boop. I mean to say, this is a completely impartial record of my games played during The Empire Strikes Back 2, a 40k tournament hosted by Borderlands very own Mike Twitchell and Horton Doughtry, held at Atomic Empire Games in Durham, NC on Aug 19th. The core of my list was the Kastelan Robot which we’ve reviewed before here and you can check out some of their crazy math here. Now lets get to my Tournament Recap: The Empire Strikes Back 2!


First off, let’s take a look at the format for this tournament as 8th edition has already seen its fair share of variances from event to event as everyone is looking to find that sweet spot as it were. This was a 3 round event; battle forged only, 2000pt list; with all current source books up to and including the Codex: Space Marines, Codex: Chaos Space Marines, Codex: Grey Knights and all of the Forgeworld Indexes (as well as the GW Indexes of course). The kicker was that every army was limited to 3 detachments, pretty standard, but furthermore was restricted to no more than 3 of any Unit (or 2 if it was in the Flyer slot). These were primarily implemented in the wake of ATC and BAO and the spamming lists that dominated those events. It did present a unique difficulty for some players, as armies such as Dark Eldar and Imperial Guard rely on proliferation of their units to created a cohesive force. For me, it was a matter of breaking one unit and spreading the models into others. Speaking of which, here’s my list:

First 8th Edition Tournament Breakdown

8th Edition Missions:

With the advent of 8th edition of Warhammer 40k comes a new take on the classic “book” missions we use to play the game. GW kept the essence of both the Eternal War and Maelstrom set of missions, but tweaked them in some places. To that effect, we’re going to examine how those changes, along with the changes in 8th edition as a whole affect gameplay at the tournament level.

Disclaimer: the data in this article is drawn from the Inaugural 8th Edition 40k Tournament, hosted by Field of Fire Gaming at Event Horizon Games on 6/17/17. The spread of armies was wide (only missing Dark Eldar, Daemons, Dark Angels, and Sisters of Battle), but being the day of release, this is by no means a comprehensive examination of the game as a whole.

Context: We had 20 attendees, with the following factions present: 3 AdMech, 3 Space Wolves, 3 Necrons, 2 Imperial Guard, 1 Space Marines, 1 Blood Angels, 1 Grey Knights, 1 Tyranids, 1 Knights/Space Marines, 1 Harlequins, 1 Eldar, 1 Orks, and 1 Tau. The armies were all Battleforged, 2000 points maximum, and capped at 3 Factions.

SO, with all that said, let’s take a look the missions, and what armies stood firm each round. We’ll also postulate some ideas as to what those armies that didn’t do so well might have been lacking with regards to the mission objectives.

Tournament Perspective: Blue Ox Quarterly

Dernicus here, having put together a short series of recent events I’ve been able to attend in the last month or so. As those who are unfortunate enough to have me in their social media feeds can attest, I’m no slouch in announcing my attendance at these events. I felt like going a bit more into these games would be fun and might give anyone curious about what tournaments mean to a player like myself. Perhaps these will encourage readers to give the various events a go in the future, all of which being regular affairs at their respective locations.
